At the foot of the Pyrenees, in the Pays de Sault, lies Le Chateau de Camurac. Nearby in the same valley are the villages Comus and Montaillou. At the southern end of the valley, between the hills, the high peaks of the Pyrenees are visible. Some of these are covered with snow all year round. Nature here is spectacular and unspoiled, and – thanks to the many "sapins" (fir trees) – the air is exceptionally pure. Craggy limestone formations dominate the broad upland landscape with its many caves and ravines. They include the spectacular Gorges de la Frau, which lead to Montségur. A stone's throw away from Le Chateau, this was the last bastion of the mysterious Cathars whose fascinating history and culture dominate the region.
Le Chateau de Camurac with its beautiful location and breathtaking views is an excellent place from where you can discover the area´s rough beauty and interesting culture. Tranquillity, space, nature and culture are our keywords.
The Chateau was built in the 16th century, firstly as a tower and mansion and was later rebuilt and extented. From 1975 it was used as a holiday inn, and since 2005, we, Remco and Marion have lived in this spectacular place with a rich history.
During your stay you will feel the atmosphere of former days and experience the relaxed way of life of the people who lived in the occitan country.
You can choose between several cosy corners in the garden, enjoying nature and breathtaking views, or in the lounge you can relax with a selection of books from our library or choose from a variety of games.
In one of the towers we have a room you can use for relaxation, to listen to the silence or for meditation. Yoga lessons and massages are possible.
We also have a playgarden, table tennis, boules, bbq, and a large outdoor chessboard in the garden. Once a month we organize a wine-tasting event.
In Camurac you can find some simple restaurants and a small supermarket.
The butcher, vegetable man and goatscheesemonger visit weekly with their fresh products and also we have fresh bread daily.
We are looking forward to sharing this special and quiet place with you, and have information for you about the numerous activities and trips in the surrounding areas. We also have maps with available showing hiking and walking routes in the area.
We speak Dutch, German, English, Spanish and French.
